When it comes to holidays, the North West’s kids won’t be parted from their tech…or their mums!
When asked for the things they would most like to take on holiday, a half of the North West’s children (50 per cent) said an iPad or a tablet, with almost one in every three (28 per cent) saying they’d bring a smart phone. In comparison, just one in four would bring a football or their bike (25 per cent and 26 per cent, respectively).
Despite a yearning for tech, the traditional family holiday is still very much alive according to the region’s children. Canvas Holidays has surveyed the county’s six-to-12-year-olds to find out what holidays mean to them and what makes the perfect getaway.
The family aspect of holidays is important to local kids, when asked who they’d like to go on a holiday with, mum topped the list with 87 per cent, dad came in second with 82 per cent. However, almost a half (46 per cent) of North West children would choose to go on holiday with their best friend rather than a sibling (sister with 42 per cent and brother with 38 per cent).
Celebrities were not nearly as popular as just eight per cent chose One Direction, six percent chose Taylor Swift and only three per cent would want to holiday with Justin Bieber.
While playing on the beach tops the list of activities the region’s kids most want to do while on holiday (90 per cent of respondents choosing this option), more than a third (37 per cent) would like to play on their tablet. Water-based fun tops the holiday to-do list with swimming in a pool and in the sea coming in second and third (75 per cent and 63 per cent, respectively). Some traditional outdoor activities are much less popular with North West’s young children, with around than one in six choosing to play cricket or rounders or go fishing (17 per cent and 16 per cent, respectively).
When asked what holidays were for, the overwhelming response was ‘having fun’ (89 per cent), followed by more than half of respondents (62 per cent) who said that holidays are for spending time with family. The region’s children are an adventurous bunch with ‘seeing new things’ and ‘exploring’ coming in third and fourth (46 per cent and 39 per cent, respectively) in the list, and one in five (23 per cent) said trying new food. Alarmingly, almost one in every six children (17 per cent) stated that holidays are for getting a suntan.
